Wormwood is a single-movement fantasy-sonata written as a continuous span without breaks. The work moves between driving toccata passages, tightly worked contrapuntal sections, and dense chordal writing with multiple independent voices, placing significant technical and structural demands on the performer.

The title refers to bitterness and purification rather than a literal program. Musical material accumulates and destabilizes across the span of the piece before giving way to a decisive release in the closing measures.
